Macular Degeneration: Early Signs and Symptoms

July 9, 2015

According to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation, macular degeneration (MD) is the leading cause of vision loss in the United States. Beach Eye Medical Group in Huntington Beach and Irvine is currently managing clients at risk for and living with MD. Although it is currently considered incurable, early detection, intervention and management of MD is possible with the help of Beach Eye Medical Group’s eye experts.

What is Macular Degeneration? | Huntington Beach

MD is the deterioration of the retina. The retina is an extremely important part of the eye and is responsible for converting light into neural signals and sending them to the brain. The macula is a part of the retina that is responsible for central vision. Any disease that affects the macula causes central vision loss, which can be likened to seeing only the numbers but not the hands of a clock.

Researchers are still in the dark when it comes to pinpointing known causes of MD. However, there are known risk factors such as aging (55 years old and above), family history, race (Caucasian), and smoking. This is why it is important for you to get your eyes checked on an annual basis or if you feel that there is something off about your eyesight. Beach Eye Medical Group offers complete eye care for all ages. Make sure to book your appointment today at either of our conveniently located offices in Huntington Beach or Irvine, CA.

Types of Macular Degeneration | Huntington Beach and Irvine

There are two types of MD. Dry macular degeneration (DMD) is the most prevalent and accounts for about 90% of people with the disease. It is caused by the accumulation of fat and protein (collectively called drusen) under the retina, which prevents light from passing through. Wet macular degeneration is considered to be the more severe type of MD. It occurs when small blood vessels form underneath the macula, leaking fluid into the eye. Wet MD progresses much faster than DMD. Furthermore, Stargardt Disease is also a form of MD. However, unlike age-related MD, it occurs in teenagers and children and is thought to be genetic in nature.
