3 Tips for Healthy Eyes on Halloween

October 4, 2016

October is the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Halloween Safety Month, and we couldn’t be more on board. Halloween is an exciting time for children and adults alike. Most people will be quick to warn you about cavities, but how about eye safety? Dr. Shah and Dr. McCluskey have some tips to keep you and your kids safe this coming Halloween.

  • Stay away from non-prescription contact lenses. Some teenagers and adults may use color contact lenses to complete their Halloween costume. They may look fun, but they can be very dangerous. They can cause infections, blindness, pink eye, and even serious cornea damage. If you must have color contact lenses, make sure they are approved by your eye doctor.
  • Remove all eye makeup well. It’s easy to get caught up in all of the festivities, but it’s extremely important to remember to remove all eye makeup, whether it’s ordinary makeup or costume makeup. Wearing it overnight can lead to infection, a real post-Halloween scare. Even if you and your children are tired from Trick-or-Treating, take a few minutes to properly remove eye makeup. “Invest in some strong makeup remover wipes,” says Dr. Shah.
  • Watch out for sharp and pointy objects. Whether it’s a pirate sword or a fairy wand, kids love playing with everything. They must be careful to not poke their eyes. Even some costumes can have spikes and points that can be extremely harmful. If you and your family are Trick-or-Treating at night, it can be even more difficult to see. Remind your children to be mindful and no one will end up with a frightening situation.

Eye safety is a serious topic, and it’s important to keep it in mind even when you’re caught up in the holidays. If you’re in need of a check-up, or looking to get prescription lenses, call Beach Eye Medical Group to make an appointment. Happy Spooking!
