5 Tips to Maintain a Healthy Vision

Did you know that May has been designated “Healthy Vision Month” by the National Eye Institute (NEI)? The NEI, a division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), supports research on eye diseases and visual disorders. As part of its ongoing mission, the NEI promotes vision health through public education and awareness initiatives. This spring, Beach Eye Medical Group in Orange County is pleased to celebrate eye health and join the campaign to help prevent vision disorders.

Tips for Healthy Vision

The human eye is a remarkable organ, which can distinguish about 10 million colors and can dynamically adjust its exposure to light as the eyes moves. Visual acuity, or clarity of vision, varies from individual to individual – but, even if imperfect, your vision is a precious sense and protecting your eyes should be a priority. Follow these 5 tips by our OC eye doctors to keep your eyes in the best possible health:

  • Schedule a routine eye exam. Like the rest of your body, your eyes deserve a regular check up. Your vision can change over time and a routine eye exam can help track subtle differences. Perhaps you consider blurry objects a normal limitation to vision when, in fact, it indicates a vision disorder that can be corrected. Or, if you already wear corrective lenses, you may need to update your prescription to optimize your eyesight. Moreover, a comprehensive routine eye exam may detect early stages of eye disease, which can increase the effectiveness of a treatment.
  • Shield your eyes from the sun. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, ultraviolet (UV) radiation can increase your risk of eye diseases, including cataracts and cancer. If the eyes are exposed to snow or ice reflection, a damaging condition known as snow blindness, a form of photokeratitis, can result. Wearing sunglasses can block out unwanted rays.
  • Use protective eye wear. Sometimes it is necessary to provide a physical barrier between your eyes and the environment, particularly if you play sports or work around hazardous materials. Goggles can prevent unwanted objects or debris from penetrating and harming the eye.
  • Avoid unnecessary eye strain. The smartphone. The computer. As a society we are glued to the screen. During your workday, take a moment to focus on objects at different distances. This gives your eyes a chance to readjust to a variety of visual situations and can help reduce eye fatigue.
  • Stay healthy. A balanced diet and a staying fit will benefit your body – and your eyes.
