Are You a Good Candidate for Lasik Eye Surgery?

February 17, 2015

Glasses help you see better, but they also come with a fair amount of frustrations. They scratch easily, are expensive to replace when you lose or break them, and can be a hassle if you participate in sports. Additionally, some people never get used to having something attached to their face during all waking hours.

Even wearing contacts is a hassle for people who dislike having to change them daily or experience frequent eye infections. If you can relate to these problems or have more of your own, LASIK eye surgery may be right for you.

What is LASIK Eye Surgery?

LASIK, which is an acronym for Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis, is a procedure in which an eye surgeon creates a flap in the cornea of your eye. He or she then uses a laser to reshape it and correct problems with focusing. LASIK patients at Beach Eye Medical Group have shown significant improvement with common vision problems such as:

  • Astigmatism: This is when your vision is mildly to moderately blurry all over.
  • Far-sightedness: Also called hyperopia. People with this condition can see objects a far distance away more clearly than they can see objects closer to them.
  • Near-sightedness: Also called myopia. This condition is the exact opposite of far-sightedness.

If you have one of these vision disturbances, are over age 18, and can see clearly with glasses or contacts, LASIK eye surgery may be the right choice for you. As with all surgical procedures, there are some risks that you should discuss with a member of our staff before scheduling an appointment for LASIK vision correction.
